Still here

Active in my other blogs. Still have future use of this one planned.

My Blog

:-P

Blogging someplace else

My Blogger site will probably not get much action until school is underway. I really only have it up to be able to test items that we might be using at the school. I've been active in my personal WordPress blog in the meantime. Cheers.

Hendrix albums needed

Still need to replace one older Jimi Hendrix album and get two others I've not owned yet.

  • Are You Experienced?

  • First Rays of the New Rising Sun

  • South Saturn Delta

Moving domain to new ISP

I'm moving my domain pepino.com over to Laughing Squid for web hosting. I'll be able to run WordPress over there for my personal blog. Blogger is nice but I wish it just had those category tags. Anyway, the website appears to be up and running over there fine. Email is still in limbo. I cannot fetch it yet with my email program but I can see it if I use the web mail client that Laughing Squid has. Well, at least nothing is getting lost.

Shutting out blogs in schools

Weblogg-ed - The Read/Write Web in the Classroom: "So here is the update from the heartland: blogs, wikis, Flickr...almost anything where kids can post content online is being blocked by schools. An elementary school teacher told me that the schools just don't want the potential problems of students doing this"

This is not good. There was a great reply in favor of student freedom in the article though:

"Stop treating problems relating to computers as different than other school related issues. Choices are choices. Educate and inform the child as to the right choices and hold them responsible if they make the wrong choices. Supervision and education are the keys not blocking. These are schools."

I hope there is not much resistance in our plan to teach the kids (and teachers) these things next school year.

Strawberry Fields is not forever

Strawberry Fields shut down: 31/05/2005 21:52 London - The Strawberry Field children's home, immortalised in song by John Lennon, finally shut down its operations on Tuesday after 69 years."

That is kind of sad. My father grew up in a children's home for while.

FBI agent W. Mark Felt is a squealer

FBI Agents Alternately Criticize, Back Felt: "Felt, 91, broke a three-decade silence Tuesday, revealing himself as the famous source [of Watergate] in an article in Vanity Fair magazine. His family said they wanted him to come forward so that he could be recognized as a true patriot..."

I agree with others who "...said Wednesday that they did consider Felt a turncoat." I would have called him a squealer.

How do jerks like this get to such important positions in our society?

Switch burned out this morning

Could not get to the servers when I woke up so rushed into work. It took me a while to find the problem as everything seemed to be working fine, even the T1 which was my first guess as going down. It turned out being my main switch which connects the servers and such was dead. Damnit. It put in an old 10Base switch at 8:39 to try and hold the network till the stores opened up. Many services ran, albiet slowly, but Mail would not work. Damnit. Luckily the Barracuda was caching everything. As soon as I got a new Netgear switch and replaced it, things worked again as usualy. So, only traffic between 4:37 am and 8:39 am was lost.

I like my new template

I am using Rounders 4, by Douglas Bowman of www.stopdesign.com. It is a good template and I've modified it up just a little bit. I'll probably stick with this for the foreseeable future. I did have one going from Glish which was all pure xhtml and css but it seemed like too much work for me at the moment to get it to look the way I wanted it to. Maybe I'll come back to it at a later time.

del.icio.us

Hmm. I have got to find a way to get my large collection of bookmarks into del.icio.us easily. I am hoping to find some quick mass importing feature, but maybe not. I dread having to add them all one at a time.

Life cannot be put to a vote

Pope Backs Catholic Campaign Against Assisted Fertility in Italy:
by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com Editor, May 30, 2005

The Vatican (LifeNews.com) -- Pope Benedict XVI has backed a campaign by Italy's Catholic Church to oppose repealing an assisted fertility law that supports say reigns in runaway research in the reproductive technologies field.

Content Filtering's Pitfalls

BBC NEWS | Scotland | Schools block sexual health sites:

"School pupils across Scotland are being denied access to sexual health websites because of internet 'firewalls', a youth organisation says."

Quartz Composer

Sam Kass's Blog: "Quartz Composer is probably the coolest technology added to Apple's MacOS X 10.4 ('Tiger'). It's an application available in the Development Tools, which is an optional install included on the operating system DVD. When installed, you'll find it in '/Developer/Applications/Graphics Tools/Quartz Composer'. It is used for things such as the RSS Screen Saver, and allows easy GUI editing of audio and video effects, although I've mostly concentrated on image bit twiddling."

When you gonna post something interesting then?

Eh? Eh?

Deciding on design

I've changed the template about a dozen times already. I just can't get satisfied with the look. I had this real cool one from Glish for a while but it seemed like too much of a headache. So, I'll just use one of the premade ones for now. When I have time to get into coding again, I'll probably tweek my own CSS and build my own look. This at least works fine for now.

Template problems

Having trouble tweaking the template. Hope this doesn't continue.

Technorati

Just signed up for a Technorati account today. A link of some sort will appear on my blog now.

Hmm

I wonder why my email posts have not shown up?

Now this post won't show up. I am editting and republishing it.

Second email post attempt

It does not seem like the first one worked.
